Stucco art history
The history of the stucco has ancient origins. The ability to shape the putty in place of clay, to use it for decoration in relief, of surfaces by means of mixtures composed of sand, marble powder, and lime is present in many past civilizations. Knowledge handed down over generations, between people, through conquest or travel. The stucco was used in architecture with different technical capabilities, structural and decorative, to beautify the interiors and exteriors of homes, churches and palaces. Among all the people of antiquity that excelled in the art of stucco, also for the ability to make the best of other cultures was the Roman one. The Roman tradition reworked the recipes and secrets acquired by other peoples, creating monuments of high quality and highly visible even today. Spokesman of this culture was Marcus Vitruvius Pollione, architect of ancient Rome, which describes how many and which layers are to be applied on the wall to obtain a stucco resistant to weathering and the passage of time. This smooth coating in imitation of marble, and applied on the walls of many houses, imitates the stone of origin, and used to decorate public buildings and private, or to improve the wall painting of the period. After a period of less artistic use of the material, the art of stucco finds its zenith in the Renaissance. The pursuit of perfection and its implementation through the work of art, sought after by the Greek and Roman culture, is taken and appropriated by the artist of humanism. The remains and archaeological finds from the Roman domus are studied not only from the aesthetic point of view but also constructive, and artists seeking to recover those old recipes that could reflect the strength and the whiteness of marble. The taste of Baroque, in his wealth welcomed the art of stucco with the maximum benefit. Hordes of talented artists worked in major city centers, major public and religious monuments of this period bear the marks of the great success of this art, many private palaces and villas, decorating with stucco becomes needful element of the furnishings of the eighteenth century, enriching the chimneys, the contours of the doors, the decorations on the ceilings and walls. After a break due to changes in intellectual and artistic movements, saw the incompatibility of art with industrial production, and the return to eco-friendly materials in construction, proposes a revival of craft production with the intent to renew the applied arts, such as stucco, as a decoration for interior and exterior. All products must possess in themselves the elegance of form and functionality to meet the new demands of the lifestyle of modern man.
